An AI Image Detector is a tool that uses AI to test if an image was created by an AI tool. This is different from an AI Content Detector which generally detects AI-generated text.
AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Meta AI can generate text by typing in a text instruction (a prompt).Other tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Adobe Firefly can create an image by describing the image with text.
AI images are bound to cause many problems and have already been used widely on social media platforms. There have been many AI images created of famous people including The Pope, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden.
Where Do AI Images Come From?
You may have seen AI images on social media or even people selling them as AI art on platforms like Etsy.
AI images come from AI image generators like Midjourney, DallE3, Stable Diffusion, Firefly and Runway ML.
Some of these tools can be a little bit complicated to get started with but the actual generating of an image is quite easy.
All you need to do is describe what you want and the AI image generator will create an image for you to download.
I use DallE3 sometimes for YouTube thumbnails.
You need to have the premium version of ChatGPT (ChatGPT Plus) to do this as far as I am aware.

The Image quality will depend on the prompt (the text that you write) and the tool that you are using. The ability to write good text instructions to an AI tool is called “prompt engineering” and is hyped to be the in-demand skill of the future (although I find I need it more and more every day now!)

To see if the image was generated by AI, you will first need to open the Winston app and navigate to the AI Image Detection tool.
You can upload the image (you will first need to download the image from your AI tool or social media) or you can copy the URL address and paste it in,
To copy an image URL you just need to right-click on the image and “Copy image address”.

As you can see, the AI tool correctly gave the result as an AI-generated image.
AI Art detector- What is real art and what is an AI image?
AI Art is when you either generate a piece of art with an AI tool or you alter an existing piece of art with an AI tool.
AI tools can generate all sorts of art like images, videos, and even music.
The most common form of AI art now is definitely AI images as they are the easiest to generate. Videos and Music AI are still very early.
But AI Literature is also starting to become a thing as one author who won a prestigious literary award admitted to using AI to write the story.
The debate will surely last for many years on whether this should really be called art but we should really have learned from Marcel Duchamp is that art is decided by the subjective opinion of the viewer.
Some people enjoy viewing AI-generated images and find them beautiful and valuable enough to purchase.
Are AI image detectors accurate?
AI image detectors are still a very new solution to a very new problem. While they won’t work perfectly every time, the Winston AI image detector correctly identified the AI images as AI every time I tried it out.
