Many people might be wondering if using a tool like Quillbot counts as AI. AI detectors like Turnitin and Winston AI can detect text from AI tools like ChatGPT.

But do they work on paraphrasing tools like Quillbot?

Yes, using Quillbot to paraphrase your AI text will be detected as AI text by Turnintin. If you use Quillbot to paraphrase your own writing, you should be fine, as long as you wrote the majority of the text. Always be upfront and ask your teachers if you can use a tool like Quillbot.

Winston AI is an AI detector that has a 99.98% accuracy rate with AI generated text.

What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a plagiarism detection service that checks student-submitted assignments against its database of academic publications, previously submitted student work, and web content.

They have also recently developed an AI detection tool which checks if students’ work was written by an AI tool like ChatGPT.

Turnitin is a tool mainly used in the Education Sector to check the originality of a text so that Universities and Schools can maintain academic integrity.

What is Quillbot?

QuillBot is an AI-powered paraphrasing and summarization tool that helps writers enhance their writing.

Quillbot also has tools to improve your writing by checking Grammar and Spelling and generating citations.

Paraphrasing can change the words in your writing so that it improves clarity, changes your tone, or reduces repetition.

Some students may attempt to paraphrase an AI text so that it bypasses an AI detector and that they can claim an AI-generated text as their own work.

Let’s see if this works.

Do AI Detectors Detect Paraphrasing tools like Quillbot?

First, let’s create some AI text with ChatGPT.

Let’s test this text with our AI detector Winston AI which has a 99.98% accuracy rate with AI-generated text.

As you can see, our tool correctly predicted that this text was created by an AI tool.

Now let’s paraphrase the text with Quillbot.

Now let’s test out this output from Quillbot to see if it gets detected by our AI detector.

As you can see, the paraphrased text was also detected as AI text by Winston AI.

Does Turnitin detect Quillbot?

Yes, Turnitin’s advanced algorithm can detect the paraphrased text that Quillbot produces. AI detectors now recognize the patterns in AI text and as Quillbot uses AI to paraphrase text, tools like Turnint can detect Quillbot as AI text.

Many users on Reddit have reported results that their paraphrased text was detected as plagiarized and AI text.

Here is an example from one Reddit user.

I am a professor who uses “Turnitin” to detect plagiarism and AI generated text. It is very accurate and does detect Quilbot as AI generated.

Is ChatGPT Detectable with Turnitin?

Yes, when you use ChatGPT to write your essay, your teacher/professor can use a tool like Turnitin and detect that you used an AI tool to write your essay for you.

It is important to note that the student will not see the AI detection score that the teacher sees.

If you paraphrase your own work with Quillbot, will it be detected as AI?

If you wrote most of the text yourself, and only changed a few words with a tool like Quillbot, then it is unlikely to be detected as AI content.

I highly recommend toggling the synonyms bar to the left so that Quillbot will not make many changes to your text.

You can also use Quillbot to paraphrase the text for you and then check through the words or phrases that you want to change and change them manually. You can also do this with a tool like Grammarly which also doesn’t get flagged as AI if minimal changes are made to the text.

What about “Humanizing” tools like Undetectable AI?

We tested out several “humanizer” tools like Undetectable AI and StealthWriter to see if they can be detected by AI detection tools.

Humanizer tools change the syntax and grammar of a text in an attempt to bypass AI detection. We have yet to find a tool that can actually bypass AI detection. In fact, most tools make the text significantly worse making them useless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Turnitin detect QuillBot paraphrasing?

Yes, Turnitin’s algorithms are now able to recognize text that has been paraphrased by QuillBot. The software can identify the distinct patterns and formatting used by this AI tool.

How does Turnitin detect QuillBot?

Turnitin uses sophisticated machine learning and natural language processing to analyze writing styles, word choices, and linguistic features to spot text created by QuillBot and similar AI writing assistants.

Why didn’t Turnitin used to detect QuillBot?

Previously, Turnitin was more focused on matching content to existing sources rather than identifying AI-generated text. But as the use of paraphrasing tools like QuillBot has increased, Turnitin has enhanced its capabilities to recognize artificially spun content.

What percentage of similarity does Turnitin show for QuillBot paraphrases?

Turnitin may show moderate to high similarity scores for text paraphrased by QuillBot, depending on how much was altered from the original. It typically highlights paragraphs as “artificial paraphrasing.”

Can QuillBot trick Turnitin if settings are adjusted?

No, even with adjusted settings, Turnitin can still pick up on the unique linguistic patterns created by QuillBot paraphrasing. Careful paraphrasing by a human remains the most reliable way to avoid detection.

Is QuillBot considered plagiarism?

Using QuillBot to paraphrase large sections of text without proper attribution is considered plagiarism by most institutions.
QuillBot should only be used to augment your own paraphrasing efforts, not replace them entirely. It’s best to properly cite sources and use QuillBot sparingly to put some passages in your own words.
Relying too heavily on QuillBot to paraphrase could still be seen as academic dishonesty. The safest approach is to use it as a tool to enhance your paraphrasing skills rather than having it rephrase everything for you.
